Getting yourself into the gym

Someone recently asked me how to build their confidence about going to the gym. Attending a gym can be daunting and intimidating because everyone around you seems to know what they are doing. They really do not! Everyone starts of feeling out of place, especially if they are embarking on a new lifestyle. Never let this feeling put you off as it will continue to bring you down, only keeping you away from your goals. 

Here are a quick few tips on how to build your confidence when it comes to going to the gym:

  • Wear clothing that covers you up appropriately. Even if you are attending a female only gym, having your body exposed can make you feel really uncomfortable. The important thing is to wear something that is comfortable, covers you in the areas you don’t want to expose but at the same times does not cause you to feel like your in an oven. Search for over sized shirts and baggy bottoms – always be on the look out as it can be hard to find at times! This will make you much more happier when you are exercising.

 

  • Start off by attending classes. This is less frightening as everyone will be doing the same exercises guided by an instructor. The group atmosphere is an excellent way to start feeling comfortable around others when exercising. I find classes are always a safe place to start, especially when you are unfamiliar with exercise routines. This will give you loads of ideas for exercises you may want to try out.

 

  • Buddy up. Find a friend to go with when it comes to classes as well as the gym. Having someone with you will make you feel less self conscious about others watching you and feeling out of place. Find someone who has similar goals to you so you can push each other to achieve them.

 

  • Have a plan. Go into the gym with an action plan of what exercises you want to do. By knowing what your plan is for that session you will be much quicker, spending less time in the gym. This is great for time management, productivity and controlling that anxiety. Going to classes will help you when it comes to finding exercises that suit you. Do not be afraid to ask the instructors in the gym as you will find many of them are surprisingly helpful!

    I enjoyed this post. Now that Eid is over no more stuffing your face, think its good to get back to working out. I think women can go to a gym just as you mentioned above some points go stick to so you keep your iman. Also timing is verything some gyms have a womens timw only and some don’t so be careful. Its best to try and gym when its quiet with a partner so you have company but not only around men.

    Really practical tips ! Especially the part about having a plan ,, otherwise we just flounder around getting intimidated by the super fit.. Lol
